Homework due Tuesday 5/23

Do this set of review problems (pdf file linked) which will help you prepare for Wednesday's test on Ch. 12, Statistics.

There's one small typo to fix. In 2a where it says "mean variance" that should be "mean deviation."

Homework due Monday 5/22

Do the problem set in the handouts from today's class, "Distributions (especially: Normal Distributions)." In part, this problem set asks you to do some of the problems from Lesson 12.6, so you'll need your textbook too.

Quiz Friday 5/12

Friday we will have a half-period quiz on the counting and probability
topics studied since the last test (see today's handout for a list of
specifics).

The homework due Friday is the set of review problems on today's handout,
and you are encouraged to discuss the answers to these problems in our
class conference in FirstClass.

Hints on review problems

Here are hints or answers for selected problems from today's review problem set.

  • 1a. Hint: P(G|D)=130/250
  • 1b. Hint: P(D|G)=130/273
  • 1c. Hint: P(D and G)=130/525
  • 2. Find 1 - P(contains no 8's) = 1 - (# FDN's with no 8's)/(total # FDN's).
  • 3. Need to multiply three probabilities.
  • 4. Don't overlook that the fives and nonfives can occur in 4C2=6 different orders, so the answer needs to include a multiplication by 6.
  • 5. Think of inclusion of each bill as a yes/no decision.
  • 6a. Find (# 3-letter words made from oca)/(# 3-letter words made from ocean).
  • 6b. Find (# 3-letter words made from ouai)/(# 3-letter words made from mountains). Don't overlook that mountains includes a double letter.
  • 7f. Answer is 1/5.
  • 7g. Answer is 1.

Test Wednesday 5/3

We will have a test Wednesday on what we have studied so far about counting and probability. In terms of the textbook, we've covered everything in Chapter 10 except: tree diagrams (in 10.6), simulations using random numbers from a calculator (in 10.7).

Tuesday in class we worked on a set of review problems about probability. We already had review problem set on counting, back on April 11-12.

Homework due Tuesday 5/2

  • Lesson 10.6 problems 9-29 odd.
  • Extra problem sheet ("More on conditional probability...") problems 1-5.
